Resumen de Intereses transatlánticos en la explotación del alumbre de Metztitlán (1535-1548)

  Los españoles se interesaron muy pronto por los yacimientos de Metztitlán, pues el alumbre era un insumo esencial para el desarrollo de la manufactura textil europea. Considerados una regalía como todo recurso mineral, fueron cedidos en concesión a un grupo de altos funcionarios de la metrópoli, quienes gestionaron su explotación a través de agentes locales. Este trabajo pretende contribuir a un tema prácticamente inédito en la historiografía sobre Nueva España, centrándose en identificar cuáles eran los vínculos que unían a los concesionarios y sus gerentes con destacados sectores del comercio y las finanzas europeas, así como en averiguar cuáles fueron las causas que motivaron el interés de éstos por el alumbre mexicano durante la primera etapa de explotación española de los yacimientos (1535-1548).

  The Spaniards quickly became interested in the deposits in Meztitlán, since alum was an essential input in the development of European textile manufacturing. Regarded as a royalty like all mineral resources, the deposits were licensed to a group of toplevel civil servants in the metropolis, who administered their exploitation through local agents. This article seeks to contribute to a virtually unexplored topic in the historiography of New Spain. It focuses on identifying the links between the license holders and their managers and key sectors of trade and European finances and on determining the causes that sparked their interest in Mexican alum during the first stage of the Spaniards� exploitation of the deposits (1535-1548).
