La identidad representativa de Venezuela se ha codificado en el mito del llanero y su canto celebratorio el Alma llanera. Considerado el segundo himno de la nación, el Alma Llanera debe sus orígenes al llamado género chico de la zarzuela española. Tras un breve estudio comparativo entre la zarzuela española y la obra venezolana, resaltan los elementos del género que han contribuido a la popularidad y consecuente asimilación de la pieza homónima en el imaginario popular de Venezuela. Uno de los aspectos que mejor contrasta al caso venezolano del español es la expresión trágica y fársica de un final inesperado que rompe con las expectativas del género chico, vislumbrándose así una sutil crítica de la sociedad venezolana de la época. The representative identity of Venezuela is codified within the myth of the llanero and its celebratory song, Alma llanera. Considered the informal national anthem of Venezuela, Alma llanera has its origins in the so-called 'género chico' of the Spanish zarzuela. Through a brief comparative study between the Spanish zarzuela and the Venezuelan example, it becomes evident which elements of the genre have contributed to the popularity and subsequent assimilation of Alma llanera into the Venezuelan popular imaginary. The unexpected tragic and farcical ending, unusual for the 'género chico', is one of the aspects that best contrasts the Venezuelan case from the Spanish, revealing thus a subtle critique of the Venezuelan society of the period. Even though it is one of the most beloved patriotic symbols of Venezuela, the zarzuela song Alma llanera is but one of many elements of a complicated artifice that problematizes the origins of the llanero myth.
