Para muchos bibliotecarios de habla hispana, la llamada �bibliotecología progresista� ha sido el primer paso de acercamiento a una forma de entender las ciencias del libro y la información hoy conocida genéricamente como �bibliotecología social�. Pese a la copiosa bibliografía que recoge sus objetivos y sus líneas de actuación, existen pocos textos que definan esta forma de encarar el pensamiento y la acción bibliotecaria. El presente ensayo busca proporcionar una definición inicial de qué es y qué hace la bibliotecología progresista.

For many Spanish-speaking librarians, the so-called �progressive librarianship� has been the first step in approaching a particular way of understanding library and information sciences generically known as �social librarianship�. Despite the abundance of information on the aims and activities of progressive librarianship, few efforts have been made to define this way of framing the thought and action related to librarianship. This essay attempts to provide some guidance as to what it is and what it does.
