Statistical production in developing countries has led to methodological innovations. Structures that are less institutionalized than in the North have led to original research, involving exposures to knowledge in demography, economics, anthropology, history, sociology, and political sciences. In Northern countries, task specialization has turned statistical work into routines by confining it within standard methodologies. Developing countries have turned out to be places of significant inventiveness. Three examples are mentioned in the paper : the genesis of an original accounting system, the discussion of population and social surveys in Africa, and the dissemination of controlled randomized experiments.

La production statistique dans les pays en développement a donné lieu à des innovations méthodologiques. Des structures moins instituées qu'ailleurs ont permis des investigations originales, impliquant une confrontation avec des savoirs en démographie, en économie, en anthropologie, en histoire, en sociologie, en sciences politiques. Dans les pays du Nord, la spécialisation des tâches a routinisé le travail statistique en l'encapsulant dans des méthodologies standards. Les pays en développement ont constitué des lieux de réelle inventivité. Trois exemples sont évoqués : la genèse d'un système comptable original, la discussion des enquêtes démographiques et sociales en Afrique, la diffusion des expérimentations aléatoires contrôlées.
