  • Resumen
    • This catalogue is intended as a guide to the Hedwig type, or possible type, material in the Hedwig-schwägrichen herbarium in G. It includes a listing of the current status of typification of the Hedwig moss names. It is hoped thet the information provided here, and through a database on the CJB website, will facilitate the long-term conservation of this important bryophyte collection. The Hedwig-Schwägrichen gerbarium became an important source of type material after Hedwig's 1801 publication Species Muscorum Frondosorum (SMF) was adopted as the starting point of moss names, excepting Sphagnum L., during the International Botanical Congress of Brussels in 1910. SMFcontained 372 descriptions of mosses (369 excluding the three Sphagnum species). Hedwig described 75 new species in SMF but the remainder of the names used in SMF were from earlier authors, such as Bridel (Muscologia Recentiorum, 1798), Dillenius (Historia Muscorum 1741), Linnaeus (Species fPlantarum, 1753, 1762), or by Hedwig himself (Stirpes Cryptogamicae, 1787-1797). After the adoption of SMF as the starting point of moss names all the names in SMF vere considered new and were automatically ascribed to Hedwig. This precipitated the need for a careful revision of the collections of Hewig and the lectotypification of the Hedwig names where necessary. Here a list of all the type and possible type material present in G for the Hedwig moss names is presented, including protologue information and details of the original labels. Published typifications found for 210 of the 369 Hedwig moss names are listed under each name. For all material present in G for the Hedwig moss names an image of the specimen sheet is given, including where more then one sheet containing possible type material for a name exists (351 images). A total of 43 specimens have been and are now recorded as not present in the bryophyte collection at G. This project will continue with the cataloguin of the herbarium collecttions of Schawägrichen.
