  • Resumen
    • While there remain in France a certain number of 16th century stained glass windows, which transpose Petrarch´s Triumphs into triumphal processions of the Virgin or of Christ, there is only one that literally illustrates the work of the Tuscan poet. Conserved in the church of Evry le Châtel (Aube) and dated 1502, it is composed of three horizontal rows of rectangular figurative units, in which each allegory is presented frontally, mounted on an unsteady chariot. These figurations are accompanied by octaves, summaries of Petrarch´s poem, by symbols, and by phylacteries bearing citations from the Scriptures. The tympanum and the lower row, dedicated to the Glory of the Virgin, inscribe this composition in the framework of the devotion of the Immaculate Conception. A sum of such iconographical originality poses the problem of graphic sources. Contemporary books of hours are of some assistance in this respect, without, however, explaining either the wealth of details or the appearance. Looking at other traditions would seem legitimate as it is known that the game of Tarots was originally called Ludus Triomphorum. Even if the theory of G. Moakley, that the game of Tarots was precisely the game of Petrarch´s Triumps can no longer be maintained today, it must be observed that the Evry Triumphs are related to playing cards, as if a relation, nevertheless, existed between Ludus Triumphorum and Petrarch. This observation throws new light on the sources of the models of the stained glass whose nature is perhaps more varied and more disparate than it is generally thought
