Basic principles of the theory and methodology of grammaticalization and of diachronic typology are brought to bear on three problems of genetic relatedness of case relators in Semitic languages: 1) the origin of the Akkadian allative suffix "-is"; 2) genetic relations of the Mari preposition "is"; 3) the genetic relationship between the Akkadian pronominal accusative suffix "-ti" and the Hebrew "nota accusativi 'et". In all three cases, reconstructions that are in conflict with well-established laws of grammaticalization and word-order change are cast in doubt, and alternative hypotheses are confirmed.
