En el artículo se analizan los orígenes y el desarrollo inicial de las actividades de explotación forestal y comercial del corcho en Extremadura, así como la aparición y evolución de la industria corchera en esta región española. Estas actividades se caracterizaron por la masiva presencia de catalanes e ingleses, primero, adquiriendo el corcho de las fincas extremeñas o arrendando la explotación de éstas, y segundo, participando en la formación de las primeras sociedades extremeñas destinadas a la transformación de esta materia prima y/o a la preparación y exportación de ésta a través de los puertos andaluces, principalmente.
This article discusses the origins and early development of the cork forest and commercial activities in Extremadura, and the emergence and evolution of the cork industry in this Spanish region.
