De la «media tempestas» al «medium aevum». La aparición de los diferentes nombres de la Edad Media

    La visión despectiva que desde el punto de vista cultural sufre la Edad Media tradicionalmente ha llevado a algunos investigadores a intentar averiguar cuándo se generó dicho prejuicio historiográfico. La respuesta a dicha pregunta tiene dos vertientes: cuál fue la época en que se gestó el concepto de una edad intermedia y cuál fue el momento puntual, necesariamente posterior, en que se acuñó por primera vez el término «edad media». Con respecto a este último campo, los numerosos debates, malentendidos y errores interpretativos que lo han caracterizado desde hace un siglo exigen una puesta al día de la información disponible.

    Este es el propósito del presente artículo, en el que se presenta y analiza una tabla cronológica con las diferentes expresiones latinas y vernáculas utilizadas para expresar ese concepto de «edad media».

    Moved by the contemptous view from the cultural point of view that traditionally the Middle Ages have been dragging on, some scholars have tried to find out when this historiographical prejudice was created. The answer to this question has got two different aspetcs: the first one, in which this concept of an intermediary epoch was generated, and the second which was the precise moment, necessarily subsequent, when the term «middle ages» was coined. In respect to the second aspect, it must be said that the high number of debates, misunderstandings and interpretative mistakes that since one century ago have characterized this field make it necessary to update the available information. This is the purpose of this paper, in which it is presented and analized a chronological table containing all the latin and vernacular terms that were used to express this concept of «middle ages».
