The paper studies the evolution of the Ecclesiastic Tribunals in their role of recognizing the annulment of matrimonies of European Catholics in the period between 1971 and 2001. The point of departure is the revision of the statistics concerning sacramental practice among Catholics - baptism and matrimony - and their development among successive cohorts. Afterwards is offered a classification of motives of annulment by those Tribunals; in this way useful data are provided in order to understand trends in matrimonial crisis.
