  • This critical study examines the main reasons for the hostility manifested to the phenomenon of the stigmata, from its inception to the present day, as well as the different attempts, rationalistic, religious, or even pathological, to belittle its uniqueness or its mystery. These include trying to reduce its uniqueness from a biographical standpoint, or by showing an over-multiplicity of its manifestations. This analysis also tries to renew the approach relating to the emergence of the stigmata, to their conditions of being, or their impression in the visible and seeing body as well as to the plurality of meaning that this engenders.
