  • Resumen
    • The 84th annual meeting of the Eastern Section of the Seismological Society of America (ES-SSA) was held on 28--30 October 2012 at the Inn at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. The meeting was hosted by the Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences and began with a visit on Sunday to the Department of Geosciences Museum led by Llyn Sharp followed by a field trip led by William Henika and Martin Chapman. The field trip, "Ancient Faults, Groundwater Flow and Intraplate Earthquakes in the Roanoke Valley," involved 29 participants and examined structural, lithological, and hydrogeological characteristics along the Mowles Springs fault zone, a prominent Paleozoic--Mesozoic cross-structure that separates Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in the Valley and Ridge near Salem, Virginia, from Mesoproterozoic basement rocks in the nearby Blue Ridge. This northwest-trending fault zone has recently hosted a series of small earthquakes. The weather for the field trip was initially fine, but as the afternoon progressed, temperatures dropped, and the humidity increased with the approach of hurricane Sandy. Sandy arrived in the vicinity of Virginia on Monday; Blacksburg was less affected than regions further to the northeast, receiving rain, a dusting of snow, and high winds, and some attendees experienced difficulties traveling to or from the meeting.
