I have preferred addressing myself to the feeling and fancy of the reader more than to his judgement. Washington Irving. Located on the Hudson River about 15 miles north of New York City, Sunnyside was the home of the writer Washington Irving (1783-1859). Irving published his early literary efforts in his native New York City. First, was the newspaper serial "Letters of Jonathan Old Style" in 1802, followed by essays for the magazine Salmagundi in 1807-1808. In 1809, the satirical History of New York by Diedrich Knickerbocker appeared, confirming Irving's reputation as an innovative, peculiarly American writer. Published in 1819, when Irving was 36 years old, The Sketch Book assured his fame as a leading Romantic author. As he suggested in the quotation above, Washington Irving expressed the romanticism of his time by appealing more to the feelings than the intellect of his readers. He was a popular success and literary hero, and by the close of his career was called "our [America's] favorite author".
