Paul D. Cooper

  • Several articles have appeared in this Journal regarding the chemical properties of oxygen and its importance on Earth for supporting biological processes. This commentary presents information regarding the discovery, formation, and importance of oxygen beyond Earth's biosphere, in particular the icy satellites of outer solar system, and shows that oxygen is likely to be important in the chemical evolution of such environments and is even of astrobiological interest.
