The communication presents us some information about the trajectory of the Portuguese social service and enhances the importance of the ISSSL (Instituto Superior de Servi~o Social de Lisboa), in the process. It also identifies the most significant events regarding the production of knowledge and at the same time refers to the challenges that Social Service must deal with nowadays.
