The historic, fragmented structure of Germany led, in terms of establishing a National Library, to a long-lasting process and to the current situation in which several institutions cover the remits of such an institution. Institutionally, there has been a National Library in Germany only since 1912: the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig.
