In den vorderorientalischen Hochkulturen des 2. Jahrtausends v.
In the Near Eastern advanced civilizations of the 2nd millennium BC, the firmament and the sun were regarded as the most important manifestations of divine personality, power and eternity, deserving of the highest cultic veneration. At the same time, the firmament and sun could be represented symbolically in very diverse ways (anthropomorphically, zoomorphically, etc.). European Bronze Age cultures, too, yield archaeological indications that the sun was a revered, visible expression of the divine, which, due to its contribution of light, warmth and life, was the most significant 'heavenly body' in the skies. What is more, amulets and other symbol-finds suggest that, in European Bronze Age cultures as well, the firmament was an object of cultic admiration.
