    Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-1894) was either substantive President, or Honorary President of the "Société de Géographie" (Geogarphical Society) from 1879 until his death in 1894. While VicePresident of the Society, he organised in May 1878, the International congress held in our Amphitheatre on the construction of the Panama Canal during which its layout was determined. Thanks to him, the membership of our Society rose to 2504 in 1624. His prestige made him the main architect of the growth of our Society an the end of the 19th century. He was at the same time visionary, a diplomat and man of action.

    Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-1894) a été soit président effectif, soit président d'honneur de la Société de Géographie de 1879 à sa mort en 1894. Il avait organísé en mai 1878, étant Vice-Président, le Congrès international qui se tint dans notre amphithéâtre pour le creusement du Canal de Panama et qui décida de son trajet. Il porta les effectifs de nos membres à 2504. Par son prestige, il fut le principal artisan de l'essor de notre société à la fin du XIXe siécle. Il était á la fois visionnaire, diplomate et homme d'action.
