This article reports the results of a field study on mobilization and production of electoral choice in a poor neighborhood of Brasilia during the 2010 elections. The main purpose is to explain the very high participation rate yet recorded in this very popular area where people are weakly politicized.
The “ compulsory ” dimension of the vote is an essential factor if we do not reduce it to binding standard weighing on voters. It is also a powerful incentive for candidates to produce an attractive offer even towards the less politicized citizens. The located observation shows that very high partici- pation rates results in large part from intense campaigning based primarily on clientelistic transactions, on face-to-face interactions and on the presence of opinion leaders more or less pro- fessionalized and well integrated into local society
