  • Resumen
    • In the beginning of the 18th century, art lovers turned progressively towards an experimental observation of works of art. Knowledge was obtained from the comparations drawn between the objects. At the same time as the changes in the perception of drawing, the function of the album of engraved drawings was modified at the turn of 18th century. Training his eye, the art amateur presently used these works as a learning tool in order to form his taste.

The fruit of networks of sociability, the albums of engraved drawings of the Comte de Caylus (1692-1765) were the result of the reunions of art lovers organized at the Hôtel Crozat during the 1720s. Thanks to his social rank and his contacts, Caylus copied the drawing of the greatest French collections: the King's Cabinet and the Pierre Crozat Collection. He was interesed in this graphic art for the appropriation of the artist's "maniera". In order to facilitate the visual comparations, Caylus regularly compiled his prints in albums that he then offered to his friends or to the amateurs. This article precisely analyses these albums, their creation and their function.
