Resumen de Resurrezione dell'antico: il sarcofago romano del Duomo di Cortona e la scultura fiorentina del primo Quattrocento

Eleonora Belli

  • Taking as her starting point Vasari's account of Donatello's enthusiastic descrption to Brunelleschi of the Dionysus sarcophagus (formerly in the cathedral and now in the museum of Cortona), the author traces the history of this important archaeological work of the 2nd century A.D. from the cosmological treatise of 1282 to local documents and guides of the 18th and 19th centuries.

She goes on to show how the influence of the reliefs on Tuscan Quattrocento sculpture, from both an iconographic and stylistic point of view, has never been fully explored and demonstrates how they were a source of inspiration for works not only by Donatello, Ghiberti and Agostino di Duccio but also Francesco di Giorgio and Botticelli.
