Resumen de Percorso di Clemente Tortelli da Chiari

Andrea Franci

  • The quality of Tortelli's work is demonstrated by the altar of S. Martino di Gusnago (Mantua) included in the exhibition "Sulle tracce di Mantegna" at Castelgolfredo in 2004. Nevertheless, studies on the artist's activity in Lombardy, even of recent date, tend to ignore his work in Campania, and vice versa. Research on his activity in Lombardy nor has received much attention and his works in Clusone have been attributed to an unidentified "Tartelli". These sculptures were recorded by the 17th-century scholar Cozzando and rediscovered by Adriano Peroni. The quality of the artist's work should place him alongside the major 16th-century Lombard sculptors, and only the absence of information on the artist can account for his not being included in the more recent repertories of Renaissance sculpture in Lombardy.
