After a summary of the organisation and promotion of the arts in Lucca from the time of the rule of Elisa Baciocchi to the Unification of Italy, with particular reference to the role of the Commission for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, the article concentrates on the exhibitions held in Lucca between 1867 and 1875; the "First Exhibition of Objects of Fine Arts, Arts and Crafts" of 1867; the "Second Exhibition of Objects of Fine Arts, Arts and Crafts" of 1869 and the "Provincial Exhibition" of 1875. The first two exhibitions provide an interesting panorama of the development of the arts, whereas the '75 exhibition is particulary important for recording how the works of art were exhibited in the Pinacoteca shortly after its official opening in 1874. The article ends with a survey of the promotion of the arts at the close of the century.
