The 1855 Paris Exposition universelle marked a key shift in the idea of art and its reception in France. The exhibition showcased the new importance of landscape painting, and challenged the traditional academic hegemony of history painting: the new landscape suggested a fresh model for artistic significance in the exhibition, as a showcase for lofty and complex human themes which had been worked into a simple subject matter. This article focuses on the works of the Romantic landscape painter, Paul Huet (1803-1869), in particular L'Inondation à Saint-Cloud, 1855, to allow for a critical review of the exhibition and its witness to changing contemporary responses to landscape painting. Through an examination of the painting's critical reception, its composition, and the artist's personal correspondence, the work is read from within contemporary perspectives on landscape and human history in Romantic landscape painting

L'Exposition universelle de Paris en 1855 est un tournant dans l'idée de l'art et dans sa réception en France. L'Exposition mit en valeur l'importance nouvelle prise par la peinture de paysages, et mit en question l'hégémonie traditionnelle de la peinture historique : les nouveaux paysages proposaient un nouveau modèle de signification artistique, comme vitrines de la façon dont des thèmes humains complexes et ambitieux pouvaient avoir été inclus dans un sujet simple. L'article se focalise sur les oeuvres du paysagiste romantique Paul Huet (1803-1869), en particulier sur L'Inondation à Saint-Cloud de 1855, afin de réévaluer l'Exposition en tant que témoignage des changements dans la réception de la peinture de paysages. En analysant la réponse critique au tableau, sa composition, et la correspondance personnelle de l'artiste, l'oeuvre est interprétée en fonction de la perspective contemporaine sur le paysage et l'histoire humaine dans les tableaux de paysages romantiques
