    Este trabajo intenta repasar sucintamente los aspectos más importantes que caracterizan al paciente fisurado. El autor se permite tomar partido en alguno de los aspectos controvertidos, tras 36 años de contacto diario con este problema, razonando su punto de vista. Se estudian como prototipos las fisuras labiopalatinas unilaterales completas, las fisuras labiopalatinas bilaterales completas y las fisuras de paladar posterior. Las fisuras labioalveolares no suelen alterar el crecimiento facial y su tratamiento es sencillo. El resto de las numerosas posibilidades siempre puede compararse con el prototipo más parecido.

    This article is a summary of the most important aspects concerning the patient with cleft lip and palate. The autbor gives his opinion of sorne of the most controversial sides of the problem after 36 years involved in this field, giving the reasons supporting his view. The three key types of cleft are studied: complete unilateral cleft of lip and palate, complete bilateral cleft of lip and palate, and cleft of posterior palate. Apart from the lip and alveolar cleft, with minor influence on the facial growth, all the possibilities of clefts have similarities with one of the prototypes here described and can be compare with one of them.
