Resumen de Proyección americana de la Guerra de las Naranjas y Tratado de Badajoz

Tras un repaso inicial al marco político y jurídico de las fronteras luso- españolas en la América Meridional, el presente artículo sintetiza las reper- cusiones de la Guerra de las Naranjas en la llamada Banda Oriental (anexión portuguesa de los Siete Pueblos de Misiones) y las causas de la derrota española. Se reseñan las vicisitudes diplomáticas que provocó la ocupación de aquellos inmensos territorios y los proyectos de reconquista acariciados por M. de Lastarría, Liniers, F. de Azara, Artigas o F. Rivera. El autor hace un análisis comparativo del estado de la cuestión en la historiografía española, portuguesa, argentino-uruguaya y brasileña para acabar postulando la nece- sidad de abordar como un único objeto de análisis histórico la Guerra de las Naranjas y la de Misiones, consideradas tanto en sí mismas como en sus consecuencias.

After an initial overview of the political and legal framework of the Spanish-Portuguese borders in South America, this article summarizes the repercusions of the War of the Oranges in the socalled Banda Oriental (the Portuguese annexation of the Seven Missions therein ) and the causes of the Spanish defeat. It describes the diplomatic clumsiness which led to the occupation of that immense territory and their proposed reconquest, as promoted by M. De Lastarría, Liniers, F. de Azara, Artigas or F. Rivera. The autor makes a comparative analysis of the subject area with reference to Spanish, Portuguese, Argentinian-Urugayan and Brazilian histories and concludes by arguing for the need to consider the War of the Oranges and that of Misiones, as a single historical unit, taking into account both the wars themselves and their consequences
