Prior to this study, the Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto had only been reported in Extrernadura frorn three localities, and no confirrned breeding had yet been reported. In 1997 the different localities were visited and surveyed, after the circulation of questionnaires. In addition, transects were carried out on the whole area (47 squares of 35 x 35 krn, 152 sarnples) to estirnate rnean density of the species. The Collared Dove was located at a total of 126 new localities, 62 of thern with nesting registered. The population of Collared Doves in Extrernadura is estirnated at a rninirnurn figure of 2, 000 birds. All in all, most areas in Extrernadura are currently inhabited by the Collared Dove, suggesting a recent, quick spread of the species in the south-west of Spain.
