The feeding of Griffon Vultures on carcasses that weigh under 5 kg is not common. Nevertheless, two observations were made of Vultures feeding on rabbits and one on a cat during autumn-winter 1996-97 in Catalonia (NE Spain). Different determinants may have caused this adaptation towards feeding on small carcasses; the main factors could be a decrease in the availability of carcasses (due to the implementation of sanitary control and the important increase in the population of the species) and perhaps the aggravating influence of adverse weather conditions that may make the search for food more difficult during some months.
