In the Mediterranean area, forestry practices and the repetition of fires lead to the homogenisation of the woodland plantings and having favoured the Allepo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.). In this study, our goals were I) to analyse the biochemical composition of mixed and singly litters, II) to study the roles of litter quality on inorganic nitrogen availability and on the microbial dynamics. Our results imply that the functional characteristics of each species canadd up and control the dynamics of the microbial enzymatic activity, of the nitrogen mineralisation, and of the microbial functional diversity. The preservation of the mixed-pine forest ecosystem appears to be an interesting forestry alternative to improve the long dated microbial functioning and potential productivity of the forest.
