    • This is an introductory editorial for articles in this Special Issue on Undergraduate Research in the Mathematical Sciences. The topics covered in this Special Issue range from reflections by experienced mentors of undergraduate research, to descriptions of program design and assessment, along with discussion of the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings that guide the practitioners. The articles include concrete, practical guidance on obtaining funding support as well as cultivating and guiding undergraduate research in mathematics, both at the individual and program levels. The authors examine and consider the outcomes of their respective experiences in mentoring individual undergraduates and organizing programs.
