Resumen de Mantegna the grammarian

Guillaume Cassegrain

  • A number of art historians in recent decades have found in Mantegna's paintings a favourable ground for the demonstration of semiotic theories descended from structuralist schools of thought. While arguably removing the art of Mantegna from its historical and social context, such readings, it is argued, raised the possibility of an original and productive approach still to be developed, notably by investigating the skewed rapport between the "sign" and its effects, and the incongruence between the "transparency" of the representation and the necessary "opacity" of an image.
