  Para reconstruir las circunstancias y la atmósfera en las que se publicaba, hace cien años, Du côté de chez Swann, podemos empezar recordando lo que se dijo del libro cuando salió. A los cronistas periodísticos les planteaba un problema la ausencia de acción, el análisis minucioso de detalles, la impresión de que el autor cuenta su vida sin elegir en absoluto entre sus recuerdos. Proust aporta aquí respuestas interesantes, sobretodo en una entrevista concedida al Temps la víspera de la publicación. Pone en evidencia, por el contrario, la evolución de los personajes en el tiempo y el papel del inconsciente. Falta subrayar todo lo que un lector de 1913 no podía adivinar: la redacción extendida en el tiempo, por lo tanto la presentación inicial de errores rectificados posteriormente, el enigma del narrador sin nombre que no es Proust, y el tema secreto de la obra - la historia de una vocación.

  Pour restituer les circonstances et l�atmosphère dans lesquelles paraissait, il y a cent ans, Du côté de chez Swann, on peut d�abord rappeler ce qu�on a dit du livre à sa parution. Aux chroniqueurs journalistiques posent problème l�absence d�action, l�analyse minutieuse de détails, l�impression que l�auteur raconte sa vie sans choisir aucunement dans ses souvenirs. Proust apporte ici des réponses intéressantes, notamment dans une entrevue accordée au Temps la veille de la parution. Il met en valeur, a contrario, l�évolution des personnages dans le temps et le rôle de l�inconscient. Reste à remarquer tout ce qu�un lecteur de 1913 ne pouvait deviner : la composition à long terme, donc la mise en scène initiale d�erreurs ultérieurement rectifiées, l�énigme du narrateur sans nom qui n�est pas Proust, et le sujet secret de l�oeuvre � l�histoire d�une vocation.

  In order to recreate the circumstances and the atmosphere which surrounded the publication of Du côté de chez Swann a hundred years ago, one could start by recalling what was said of the book when it came out. Several things struck the journalists at the time when writing their reports: the absence of action, the thorough analysis of detail and the impression that the author was telling of his life without any particular discernment in his memories. Proust provides interesting answers to these matters, mainly through an interview given in the Temps, on the eve of the publication. He draws attention to the evolution of the characters through the sequence of time as well as to the role played by the unconscious. However, one still needs to underline all which a reader of 1913 could not possibly guess: first, the writing�s extension through a long period of time and the ensuing amendment of errors committed in the initial writing; secondly, the mystery of the narrator�s voice, the storyteller without name who is not Proust himself; and finally, the secret subject of the book: the story of a vocation.
