Resumen de Ancora sulla cerchia di Ribera a Napoli: proposte per Hendrick De Somer e Giovanni Ricca

Gianluca Forgione

  • The article proposes new additions to the catalogues of Hendrick van Somer and Giovanni Ricca, two painters who have recently returned to the centre of the critical debate on early 17th-century painting in Naples.

In particular, it has been possible to reattribute to Somer, on the basis of targeted comparisons with certain of his masterworks, the intense "St. Jerome" in the Charterhouse of Serra San Bruno, which was most recently ascribed to Georges de La Tour's much narrower circle. Giovanni Ricca's list of works is argumented by the little known "St Barbara Led to Martyrdom" in the Museu Civico, Castel Nuovo, attributed to him for the first time on the basis of stylistic affinities with his signed "Adoration of the Shepherds" in Potenza and other works recently assigned to the master's catalogue.
