Within a research project titled Residential Property for Generations a specific form of suburban area with privately owned homes in owner communities was analysed. By means of organised group self-help, the future homeowners took part in the building of their homes with thousands of working hours each. The objective of the research project was to investigate if these owner communities may easier cope with generation change and neighbourly help than other suburban residential areas, although inhabitants grew significantly older. Results show that strong neighbourhoods still exist, but in some estates social cohesion is fading away.
