    Based on the facts of reality, especially the cutting of trees in a public space of the city of Porto Alegre, RS, it is discussed the opposition of two logics of development in Brazilian society: Economic Growth and Sustainable Development. The facts illustrate how Brazil is far from achieving sustainable development by analyzing it in light of the sustainability dimensions of Ignacy Sachs, in which can be verified fundamental barriers to action and claims of citizens and organizations whose aims are against dominant logic of development in Brazil, where the economic dimension prevails. Finally, it is clear that to change this scenario, Brazil needs structural changes in organicity and functionality of its institutional system , in particular the political and the educational ones. For without changing the structure which paralyzes the changes it will be difficult to have changes in the society. Furthermore, the educational and citizen formation is the base for people to have a conception of totality and complexity in relation to society and to life on Earth, so as to interpret the society they live in under all dimensions of sustainability, and not just under the point of view of a dimension or theoretical discipline. Therefore, to live with quality of life there must be a balance between the dimensions of sustainability, and to see that the human being is part of the biological life on this planet, interacting with it and in interdependence with other species. The current reality represents a huge challenge to implement sustainable development and luckily there are initiatives that carry this ideal, representing a resistance to the dominant model of development and an alternative to sustainable development.

    Com base em fatos da realidade, em especial o corte de árvores em um espaço público da cidade de Porto Alegre, RS, discute-se a contraposição de duas lógicas de desenvolvimento na sociedade brasileira: o Crescimento Econômico e o Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Os fatos ilustram o quanto o Brasil está longe de alcançar o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, analisando-se à luz das dimensões da sustentabilidade de Ignacy Sachs, das quais pode-se verificar entraves fundamentais à ação e reivindicação de cidadãos e entidades, cujos propósitos vão contra a lógica dominante do desenvolvimento no Brasil, em que prevalece a dimensão econômica. Finalmente, percebe-se que para mudar esse panorama, o Brasil precisa de mudanças estruturais na organicidade e funcionalidade de seu(s) sistema(s) institucional (is), em especial o político e o educacional. Pois sem mudar a estrutura que engessa as mudanças, será difícil haver transformações na sociedade. Além disso, a formação educacional e cidadã é a base para as pessoas terem uma concepção de totalidade e complexidade em relação à sociedade e à vida no planeta Terra, de forma a interpretarem a sociedade onde vivem sob todas as dimensões da sustentabilidade, e não apenas sob o ponto de vista de uma dimensão ou disciplina teórica. Portanto, para se viver com qualidade de vida é necessário haver o equilíbrio entre as dimensões da sustentabilidade, e ver que o ser humano é parte biológica da vida deste planeta, interagindo com ele e em interdependência com outras espécies. A atual realidade representa um enorme desafio para implementar o desenvolvimento sustentável e felizmente existem iniciativas que carregam este ideal, representando uma resistência ao modelo dominante do desenvolvimento e uma alternativa ao desenvolvimento sustentável.
