The object of this study is to describe the consumption of antiasthmatic drugs and its evolution during a period of three years in the environment of primary care. The study has taken place in the Primary Care Interior County at the Health Area in Bizkaia between July 1996 and June 1999, obtaining the data through a computer application from the Health Department of the Basque Government. It has been utilized the dose per 1000 inhabitants per day (DHD) as a comparative indicator. The consumption of antiasthmatic drugs follows an ascending and seasonal profile by reaching the maximum value of 46.60 DHD during the first trimester of 1999. The consumption of ipratropium bromide, of beta2-agonists and inhaled corticoids is on the rise. As active principles, terbutaline is the most used (8.10-12.88 DHD), followed by budesonide, ipratropium and salmeterol. The presciptive profile and the observed trends are adjusted to the scientific recommendations for the asthma treatment
