  • Objective: To study the evolution of the extrahospitalary utilization of antimicrobials in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja. Method: Retrospective observational study. There are obtained all the prescriptions of anti-infectious drugs dispensed in the area of La Rioja in 1996, 1997 and 1998, from the invoicing tapes of the Social Security prescriptions. Afterwards, there are calculated for every active principle the consumed DDD and DDD/1000 inhabitants/day (DHD). Results: The consumption of anti-infectious drugs progressively decreases from the year 1996 to the year 1998: 21.83 DHD (year '96), 20.76 (year '97) and 19.68 (year '98). The five more prescribed therapeutic groups are: penicillins, macrolides, cephalosporins, quinolones and urinary antiseptics. Conclusions: We have established that the utilization of third generation cephalosporins and quinolones is slightyly decreasing; we observe, as well, an increase in the use of clavulanic-amoxicillin and a clear improvement in the utilization of associations
