    The area around the upper and middle Rhine is often mentioned as a region of contact between the Celts and Romans in the West as well as the Germans in the East. Many historical events are known from this territory, which create a turbulent picture of various migrations of peoples. The present report seeks, with the help of the written sources, to examine more closely these historical occurrences and their consequences for the antique population in the last two centuries B.C. it can be shown that it is very difficult, even dangerous, to connect ethnic classifications with archaeological events of the basis for the historical record.

    Le Rhin supérieur et moyen est traditionnellement une région de contact entre Celtes et Romains à l'ouest et Germains à l'est. Cette région a connu une série d'événements historiques qui nous donnent une vision mouvante d'installations et de déplacements de populations. Cet article tente de préciser, à travers un réexamen des sources antiques les événements historiques connus pour cette région et les conséquences qu'ils ont pu avoir sur les problèmes de peuplement au cours des deux derniers siècles avant notre ère. Il en ressort qu'il reste extrêmement difficile, voire dangereux, de vouloir superposer des notions ethniques à des données archéologiques.

    Das Ober- und Mittelrheingebiet wird immer als Kontaktregion zwischen den Kelten und Römern im Westen sowie den Germanen im Osten angesprochen. Für diese Landschaft kennt man mehrere geschichtliche Ereignisse, die ein bewegtes Bild von verschiedenen Völkerwanderungen zeichnen. Dieser Beitrag versucht anhand der schriftlichen Quellen, diese geschichtlichen Ereignisse und deren Folgen für die antike Bevölkerung in den letzten zwei vorchristlichen Jahrhunderten näher zu beleuchten. Es kann gezeigt werden, daß es sehr schwiering, sogar gefährlich ist, anhand der historischen Überlieferungen ethnische Zuordnungen mit archäologischen Ereignissen in Verbindung zu bringen.
