El cultivo del café se convirtió en el producto más emblemático de la historia económica de Centroamérica, ya que fue con este producto que la región se inserta al mercado mundial en segunda mitad del siglo XIX. De esta manera, el artículo se refiere al análisis sobre la importancia de la actividad cafetalera, en principal, su prodigiosa función socioeconómica de movilidad que permitió a Costa Rica ser el país más rico y dinámico del istmo. En segundo nivel, plantea lo contradictorio que también resultó la caficultura para la economía del país; ya que lo conllevó, a una situación de extrema dependencia, deformación y vulnerabilidad. Partiendo de esa idea, el trabajo esboza como la consolidación de este monocultivo ata y condiciona a la economía costarricense a los vaivenes del mercado internacional. En concreto, como las crisis estructurales causadas por la expansión del sistema capitalista, producen desajustes al modelo monocultivista agroexportador costarricense.

Coffee cultivation became the flagship product of the economic history of the Central American, as it was with this product that region is inserted into the world market in the second half of the nineteenth century. Thus, the article refers to the analysis of the importance of the coffee activity in main role his portentous socioeconomic mobility that allowed Costa Rica to be the richest and most dynamic of the isthmus. At second level, the contradiction arises coffee farming was also for the country's economy because it led to a situation of extreme dependency, distortion and vulnerability. Based on this idea, the paper outlines the consolidation of this monoculture and conditions attached to the Costa Rican economy to the vagaries of the international market. Specifically, as the structural crisis caused by the expansion of the capitalist system, the model mismatches occur Rican agricultural export monoculture.
