En Europa central y oriental las estrategias de construcción nacional suelen estar relacionadas con un tipo de minorías nacionales que tienen vínculos, tanto objetivos como simbólicos, con su Estado matriz. Uno de los casos que mejor ilustran el desarrollo histórico y la situación actual de este tipo de minorías son las minorías húngaras transfronterizas. Nuestro objetivo principal es dar a conocer cómo influyen en ellas las políticas actuales de construcción nacional de Hungría y por qué estas políticas no responden a sus necesidades. Para este fin no basta realizar una investigación documental, ya que las naciones y el nacionalismo son fenómenos duales, construidos esencialmente desde arriba, pero que no pueden entenderse a menos que se analicen desde abajo. Por esta razón, después de estudiar los antecedentes históricos de Hungría; las mencionadas estrategias políticas de construcción nacional; y la situación de las minorías húngaras transfronterizas, hemos realizado trabajos de campo etnográficos en dos comunidades húngaras, la de Prekmurje/Muravidék en Eslovenia y la de Transcarpatia en Ucrania. Debido a las diferencias que hay entre ellas, su estudio a nivel local e interpersonal permite captar la diversidad de estas minorías y la complejidad de las cuestiones nacionales al respecto.

In Central and Eastern Europe, nation-building strategies tend to be associated with the type of national minorities which have objective and symbolic relationships with their kin-State. One of the cases that best illustrate the development and the situation of these is that of the Hungarian transborder minorities. Our principal aim is to show how the current Hungarian national policies affect their everyday life and why the aforementioned is not capable of responding to their necessities. In order to achieve this aim, a documental investigation is not sufficient due to the fact that nations and nationalism are dual phenomena, constructed essentially from above, but cannot be understood unless they are also analysed from below. Therefore, after studying the historical background of Hungary, its new national policies and the situation of the Hungarian transborder minorities we have carried out several ethnographic fieldworks. The particular focus has been on two specific Hungarian communities: one in Prekmurje/Muravidék (Slovenia), the other in Zakarpattia Oblast (Ukraine). Because of the significant differences between the two of them, studying them at the local and interpersonal levels allows us to realise the diversity of these minorities and the complexity of national questions on the matter.
