This paper aims to understand the main social, political and cultural circumstances that define the current Cuban cinema, and, especially, the work of Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti. To this end, a comparative analysis was carried out of two important works of the director: Nada (2001) and Viva Cuba (2005). Through it, common aspects were observed such as the presence of elements of TV language, the influence of culture and history of Cuba on the narrative, and the characters' relationship with their homeland. In this context, it is understood that the socioeconomic situation of the country, after the special period, is related with the director?s movies in the narrative and life history of the characters, as well as the need to make films in co-production with other countries
