    En la pintura española de la Edad Moderna el bodegón fue considerado (con alguna excepción) como actividad menor, relegado a la condición de ejercicio de taller, práctica de destreza, e incluso como sencillo divertimiento del artista. Si se tiene en cuenta, además, que el gusto estético de Alonso Cano se identifica con una percepción del naturalismo tamizada de poética, esta línea figurativa fue periférica a sus intereses. Sin embargo, sería un error afirmar de forma rotunda que el pintor granadino tuvo una actitud de rechazo hacia la pintura de naturaleza muerta; ya que, utilizándola como el complemento iconográfico más idóneo (atributo o símbolo) de algunas de sus creaciones religiosas, hizo sugerentes incursiones en el género. Retazos entresacados del natural, interpretados con sensibilidad y hábil tratamiento pictórico, que he calificado como pequeños bodegones.

    Within the Spanish paintings of Modern Times, still life was considered (with a few exceptions) as a minor activity, consigned as a workshop exercise, a practice skill or even a simple artist entertainment. If one considers also that the aesthetic taste of Alonso Cano can be identified with a naturalism perception sieved in poetry, this figurative line of action was peripheral to his interests. Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to emphasize that the painter from Granada had a rejection attitude towards still life; as, using it as the ideal iconographic complement (attribute or symbol) of some of his religious creations made suggestive incursions in this genre. Remnants extracted from nature, interpreted with sensibility and a skillful pictorial treatment, that I have qualified as small still life paintings.
