  • Bangladesh, St Lucia, the Philippines and dozens of other countries are affected by serious storms and flooding. The damage from these and other hazards could be reduced through effective programmes that control the type, density and location of coastal settlements. It is particularly important that such programmes preserve natural landforms that take the brunt of storms and thus protect lives and community structures.
