This Viewpoint summarizes current UK government policy on contaminated land and examines some of the problems with the present system: the absence of both encouragement to deal with contamination other than as part of proposals for redevelopment of sites, and of flexibility about after-uses in order to secure treatment, the lack of expertise available to planning authorities and information about the extent of contaminated land, and some of the difficulties in the grant aid system.
