Despite centuries of writings and research into cardiac anatomy and function, the topic is still advancing, particularly in relation to clinical applications and embryological significance. This article presents the heart with reference to the classical anatomical position and attempts to clarify the nomenclature that is most commonly used by anatomists. We encourage clinicians to use the same terminology. The references are from an excellent compilation on the heart in Clinical Anatomy.
In Part 1 we cover anatomy, physiology and biochemistry of the normal heart. We then cover the history and clinical examination before providing an overview of basic and non-invasive investigations. Finally we cover cardiac catheterization. Part 2 will cover atherosclerosis (risk factors and prevention, coronary syndromes and revascularization), and vascular disease. Part 3 will cover cardiac muscle disorders (heart failure and its treatment), electrophysiology and devices. Finally Part 4 will cover structural heart disease (valvular heart disease, pericardial disease, congenital heart disease and heart disease in pregnancy). Genetics and pharmacology are covered where relevant in each Part. In addition, and where relevant, each Part covers some useful tips for common practical procedures.
