Resumen de El pueblo mapuche y sus relaciones fronterizas: de España a Chile, entre resistencia y asimilación

En el siguiente artículo, analizaremos la evolución histórica de la frontera entre el territorio mapuche y sus vecinos españoles y chilenos, desde los tiempos de la Colonia hasta el período actual. Según nuestra hipótesis, las relaciones entre el Estado chileno y el pueblo mapuche se caracterizan desde fines del siglo XIX hasta hoy, por un doble movimiento: de una parte, una suerte de neo colonización jurídico legal, a través de la imposición de ciertas instituciones y de un cierto tipo de territorialidad sobre los mapuche, y de otra parte, distintas formas de resistencia desplegada por estos últimos. Para ilustrar estas resistencias, nos concentráremos en el fenómeno de las "recuperaciones de tierra" (ocupaciones por la fuerza de terrenos privados, de forma relativamente continua en el tiempo por parte de las comunidades mapuche). Nos proponemos como objetivo, describir cuál es el rol que estas últimas juegan en el proceso de re-significación de la antigua frontera del río Bío-Bío, y en las actuales demandas territoriales mapuche. Será necesario primero, (a modo de contextualización histórica), examinar brevemente como se estableció la frontera territorial entre el reino de España y el territorio mapuche (yendo de la guerra encarnecida hasta la firma de los tratados de paz a mediados del siglo XVII). Estudiaremos luego cuáles fueron las estrategias del Estado chileno para suprimir paulatinamente esta frontera, e incorporar así definitivamente el territorio. Finalmente nos concentrarnos las recuperaciones de tierras como practicas específicas de resistencia.

In this text, we study the evolution of the border between the mapuche territory and its neighbors, from Spanish colonial times to the current period. According to our hypothesis, relations between the Chilean state and the mapuche people manifest a double movement: on one hand, a neo-colonization based on a powerful legal system imposing certain types of institutions and territoriality to the mapuche, and on the other hand, the various forms of resistance displayed by them. To illustrate this resistance, we focused on the phenomenon of "land recovery" (occupation by force of private land by the Mapuche communities): our goal is to explain the role played both in the current Mapuche land claims and the process of re-signification of the old frontier. We will examine first how this first border with the Kingdom of Spain was established as well as its evolution in time, focusing on the major historical processes that lead to the current situation, Then we will study the strategies of the Chilean State intended to suppress the border and occupate definitively the territory. Finally we will concentrate on the land recovery practices of the Mapuche, their meaning and their evolution.
