Knowledge upon the emergency contraceptive pill in Spain

  • Background: The emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) is dispensed without prescription in Spain since 2009. An easy access could diminish unwanted pregnancies; however, there is a risk of misuse. The aim of the present study is to further learn the main characteristics of the users and to explore their level of knowledge about the correct use of the ECP. Basic Procedures: A cross-sectional study was carried out in three community pharmacies in Spain. A closed questionnaire administered by the pharmacist was used. Main Findings: Between 2011 and 2012, 233 users were surveyed (25.4 mean year's age); most of the users (92.2%) asked for ECP within 24 hours; 55.4% had used ECP previously. Only 28.8% scored in the upper level of knowledge; the previous use of ECP was statistically associated with this higher level. Principal Conclusions: A high proportion of ECP's users had an insufficient knowledge about this medication. More educational interventions are needed
