  La valoración de la población local del desarrolloturístico acontecido en los últimos años en ellitoral sur de la provincia de Alicante (España) esel objeto de este artículo. A partir de la teoría delintercambio social se analiza la percepción delos residentes sobre los benefi cios del turismo.El trabajo se presenta en dos fases. La fasecualitativa, basada en entrevistas en profundidady grupos de discusión, guía la segunda faseconsistente en la aplicación de una encuesta a lapoblación residente española. Se ha hallado quelas personas que se encuentran laboralmenteligadas al sector turístico reconocen el turismocomo el motor que ha impulsado el desarrolloeconómico y social de sus localidades pero sonmás críticos con el modelo establecido. Tambiénson los que defi enden el proceso de desarrollollevado a cabo pero interpretan la masifi caciónalcanzada como un problema de colapso quehay que solucionar.

  This article examines the opinions of the localpopulation on the south coast of the Spanishprovince of Alicante regarding the developmentof tourism in recent years, analysing theirperception of the benefi ts of tourism using thesocial exchange theory. This study is presentedin two stages. The qualitative stage, whichis based on in-depth interviews and focusgroups, acts as a guide for the second stage,which consists of a survey conducted with theresident Spanish population. It was found thatpeople linked to the tourist sector through theirwork view tourism as the driving force behindthe economic and social development of theirtowns, although they are more critical thanothers of the model that has been established.They defend the development process that hastaken place, but feel that overcrowding bringstheir towns to a standstill and needs to beresolved.
