Labelling is unavoidable, but how closely do labels reflect the things they describe? In Africa, social and economic labels are frequently closely involved with problems of agricultural development. The author shows how misleading labels can be � are �Communal Areas� in Zimbabwe entirely communal?, are they so different from the �Commercial Areas�? � and he looks at the effects and consequences of labels (which, it seems, often have prescriptive rather than descriptive validity).
