The "summa" with the incipit "Tractaturus magister", transmitted only in the manuscript Paris Bibl. Nat. 15994, has been long known. The article discusses the authorship of this treatise and the history of its origin. The starting point of closer research is the vast corpus of decretal quotes, of adoptions of canons issued by the third Lateran council, and the intense use of Burchard of Worms's decreturn. lt turns out that .Tractaturus magister" was probably written in 1182. Its author is presumably Jean de Breteuil, member of the school of canonists in Reims
